Firenze or Florence, Italy has been a hub for leather products for hundreds of years. Techniques used for tanneries and leather craftsmanship have passed on from generation to generation and kept as a family secret.

During the 13th century, most of the leather markets were in the Santa Croce district in Florence. Still, over time these markets were moved out of town due to some the smell of leather production, to what became known as Santa Croce Sull’ Arno between Florence and Pisa (Arno is the main river running through Florence).

Fast forward to today, there are several leather markets in Florence by the bridge over the Arno river, but the most famous is the San Lorenzo market, where vendors surround the San Lorenzo streets.

Growing up in Italy, some of my most fantastic memories are going to the Florence market of San Lorenzo. Street vendors selling Italian leather handbags, sweaters, scarfs, and other souvenirs surround the streets of San Lorenzo church. I can still smell the scent of leather while strolling through the streets.
